Description:
Baritone voice and brass quintet
The composer was inspired for this remarkable work by the poems of Walt Whitman (1819-1892), whose texts deal with war and its appalling suffering and consequences for mankind. Although these poems specifically highlight the War of Secession (1861-1865) in America, the themes are universal and timeless. Brass quintet combined with baritone voice are perfectly suited to evoke this wide range of emotion and nuance, expressing the violence, grief, suffering and hopes of the people of war.
Songs of War and Loss, for brass quintet and baritone voice, is a commission from the American Brass Quintet for a collaboration with renowned vocalist Christopheren Nomura.
The world premieres were programmed for the 2011-2012 season, first at Lincoln Center New York, then at the Aspen Music Festival.
This commission was made possible thanks to the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.
