[......] I was well aware of the Christmassy character of the famous theme because the melody has long existed as a four-part choral setting with its own text under the title "Weihnachtsstern". However, apart from several repetitions, this movement is limited to the theme and is therefore relatively short. This gave me the idea of arranging the symphonic movement - shortened by the dramatic middle section - as an arrangement for choir and orchestra for the Christmas service. However, I didn't particularly like the above-mentioned text, and I began to think about how I could parody the melody differently and more appropriately. [...]
