This chamber cantata for two sopranos, harpsichord and string trio was commissioned by the Shakespeare Institute with the aid of funds made available by West Midlands Arts in 1984. Based on Shakespeare's poem, The Phoenix and the Turtle is a metaphysical allegory of Love and its Consummation in Death - a sort of ornithological liebestod. This item is the string trio parts.
