Description:
The Swan of Tuonela, Op. 22 No. 2 by Jean Sibelius is one of the Finnish composer's best-known symphonic poems. The work is part of the Lemminkäinen Suite, which is inspired by the Finnish national epic Kalevala. It depicts the sacred swan gliding silently over the dark waters of the river that surrounds Tuonela - the realm of the dead. The music unfolds a deeply mystical and contemplative atmosphere, carried by a melody of great purity. In this arrangement by Thierry Caens, the solo horn in F takes on the expressive role of the famous melody, originally entrusted to the cor anglais. Surrounded by an ensemble of fifteen brass instruments, timpani, bass drum and organ, the work takes on a broad and majestic sound dimension without losing its dark, poetic mood. The rich timbres of the brass emphasize the harmonic depth of Sibelius and create an almost liturgical atmosphere. This version particularly emphasizes the nobility of the horn and the expressiveness of the brass ensemble.
