Description:
Three Sides for trumpet/flugelhorn, vibraphone, and piano was written in 2010 for Raymond Mase, a legendary New York trumpeter. The work is in three movements and is a blend of pointillism and lyricism. In addition, the trumpet uses a metal straight mute to give the louder, more articulated sections a bite, while silver lines characterize the lyrical passages. The second movement is played entirely on the flugelhorn, which lends the texture a warmer and more intimate quality. This is enhanced by the vibraphone playing the bars with a bow, producing beautiful, lingering tones. The definitive recording of "Three Sides" appears on the album *Chesapeake: The Music of David Sampson*, featuring Raymond Mase on trumpet/flugelhorn, James Baker on vibraphone, and Steven Beck on piano (Summit Records DCD 639).
