Description:
Tower March was composed for the Trumpetissimo ensemble and the 28th Gdańsk Carillon Festival in 2026, following the great success of earlier concerts in Denmark and Sweden featuring music for natural trumpets and historical timpani. The work will be performed in Gdańsk by the Trumpetissimo ensemble together with the city carillonneur Monika Kaźmierczak. The piece was written for the carillon of St. Catherine’s Church in Gdańsk, one of the few functioning carillons in Poland. Later, a second version was created for the carillon at Brøndby Strand Church in Denmark, which had to be transposed and partially octaved due to the instrument’s different range and tuning. The combination of natural trumpets, timpani, and carillon is extremely unusual. As a specialist in the natural trumpet, the composer wanted to explore the unique blend of sounds produced by these instruments. Since natural trumpets can only play notes from the overtone series, the work employs trumpets in three different tunings (D, D-flat, and C), resulting in richer and more unusual harmonies—with a particular emphasis on minor-key sounds that ideally complement the sound of the carillon.
