Saint-Saëns’s two "official" piano trios—No. 1 in F major, Op. 18, and No. 2 in E minor, Op. 92—are among the core works of the genre, as evidenced by the large number of performances and recordings of them. Both works appear here for the first time in a historical-critical edition; for the second trio in particular, numerous newly discovered sources were examined, which differ so greatly from one another that the finale is published in two different versions.

Saint-Saëns’s arrangement of his famous Trumpet Septet, Op. 65, as well as the original version of the duo "La Muse et le Poète," Op. 132, are genuine additions to the repertoire. Last but not least, this lavishly illustrated volume contains two first publications: an early (and quite playable) fragment of a piano trio in G major by the 13-year-old Saint-Saëns, which reveals some of the young composer’s musical influences. Alongside this fragment is the apocryphal arrangement of a movement from the "Oratorio de Noël," Op. 12, known only from a shellac record.

All six works in this volume combine stylistic and genre models and traditions with contemporary trends in their own unique and original ways, blending the familiar with the unexpected. What Charles Lecocq wrote in 1893 about the Trio in E minor, Op. 92, applies to all six:
"It is always a pleasure for me to read works like this trio, which, on the one hand, is absolutely modern in its style and, at the same time, denies nothing of that art that was taught to us in school and which I love so much!"
