Description:
Undercurrents Redux originally evolved from the solo piece "Undercurrents" for solo flute, which was composed in the spring of 2007 for Amy Porter, a longtime friend and inspiring musician. In 2010, the piece evolved into Undercurrents Redux when it was commissioned by the Palisades Virtuosi. The inspiration for the work stems from the composer’s memories of the long summers of his childhood, which he spent by the streams near Camden, South Carolina. Fascinated by the diverse life above and below the water’s surface, he discovered a small world of his own there, full of water striders, crayfish, minnows, and tadpoles. At the time, these waters seemed to him like a universe of their own. The work consists of a single movement based on variations of the original theme. It begins with a lyrical and nostalgic mood and gradually develops into a livelier and more playful soundscape. Moments of tension and danger are introduced, accompanied by a wide variety of tempos, timbres, and playing techniques. The musical journey concludes with a series of powerful and virtuosic final gestures.
