Description:
"How lovely are your dwellings" is a new composition (2023) on Psalm 84 by Torsten Laux (*1965).
It is therefore a contemporary piece from the early 21st century that combines this religious text with its encouraging message with reinforcing music. The style used could be called "neo-impressionism".
After the ambitious actionism of late Romanticism, the impressionists indulged in effortless dream worlds, cozy comfort, aimless distraction and passive contemplation.
The avant-garde of the 20th century, on the other hand, wanted to distinguish itself through provocation, innovation, self-expression and the transgression of boundaries. Theodor W. Adorno, music aesthete of the 1960s, rejected musical references to past romanticism as kitsch. Music became more and more absolute, more complex, more cacophonous, less and less comprehensible and increasingly closed itself off into an ivory tower without reference.
Now, however, further developments in the still young 21st century are dissolving the self-purpose of progress, which was reduced to absurdity in the 20th century, and thus leading to new freedoms.
After the turn of the millennium, we are now experiencing a turning point in the history of music. It is once again permissible to compose beautiful music that can be performed e?ectively with relatively little effort. Ideas, surprises, dissonances and provocations can be integrated as means of expression. Music can again convey a message. Music can express a text interpretively and make it intuitively accessible.
