Gedalge's Fugue Treatise was published in 1904 and offered as a text for the use of students in Counterpoint and Fugue classes at the Paris Conservatory. The treatise has two important attractions: on the one hand, its exemplification based on fragments of works by great composers in the history of music; on the other hand, an anti-dogmatic tone, which almost always manages to give a coherent justification to the rules of the technique of classical counterpoint and fugue, without any reluctance to discard those that he considers absurd or useless.
