Description:
The Concerto in E is a work of the night: while composing it in many nocturnal sessions, the composer had the black and white images of an imaginary "film noir" in his mind's eye and saw people acting silently in the backdrop of a dimly lit tango dance hall, seeking liberation and oblivion in dance - alone together. These mask-like figures were part of the same modernity that they suffered from, and their dancing with anonymous partners expressed the attitude to life of modern man.
In addition to the tango itself, the two other genres of tango argentino also appear in the concerto, a vals in the second movement and a milonga in the third movement, which finally becomes aware of its origins in candombe as it stomps along. The introduction to the second movement quotes Carlos Gardel's "Mi Buenos Aires Querido" and the vals theme in the middle section of the movement paraphrases the melody of his tango canzone "Tomo y obligo".
Two copies are required for the performance
