Ludwig van Beethoven's "Meeres Stille und Glückliche Fahrt" op. 112 for four-part choir and symphonic orchestra sets a pair of poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and can best be categorized as a choral ode. First performed in 1815, the composition still impresses today with its atmospheric depth. Although Beethoven never went to sea himself, he succeeds in creating an impressive depiction of seafaring: the threatening calm - synonymous with immobility and dwindling food supplies in the age of sailing - is set to music through low choral passages over pianissimo string sections. In "ungeheuren Weite", a sudden forte crescendo spanning more than five octaves comes as a surprise. In contrast to this is the "Glückliche Fahrt" with restless compound meters and flowing diatonic scales that express confidence and joyful excitement. This arrangement for chamber orchestra also makes it possible for smaller choirs and choirs with limited space or financial resources to set sail. The piano reduction and choral score of the original edition (Carus 10.395/00) can be used for this arrangement. For a balanced sound in the orchestra, it is recommended that the strings be scored 4 (3) / 4 (3) / 2 / 2 / 1 rather than solo. Original version: Coro SATB, 2 Fl, 2 Ob, 2 Clt, 2 Fg, 4 Cor, 2 Tr, Timp, 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb, arrangement for chamber orchestra: Coro SATB, Fl, Ob, Clt, Fg, Cor, Tr, Timp, 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb.
