Description:
Carl Friedrich Abel's compositional oeuvre includes 18 string quartets, four oboe sonatas, overtures, instrumental concertos, pasticii and symphonies, which can be stylistically assigned to the circle of the Mannheim School. The present three-movement Sinfonia ex D still lacks the minuet and is content with a slower short middle movement in G major. The four wind instruments silent here and the subdominant key of G major give the work a moderately contrasting character. The two-part opening movement Allegro is conceived in a pre-classical way, while the third final movement Presto in 3/8 time can be played quite quickly. The critical new edition is based on an original complete copy of the parts from around 1773, formerly owned by the Central Hessian monastery of Arnsburg, which was secularized in 1805. Obvious misprints such as incorrect number of pauses, lack of dynamics, staccato dots and tie sheets have been eliminated or added and indicated by brackets or dashes. The same applies to the metronome specifications - these are suggestions of the editor.
