Description:
Based on poems by Federico García Lorca, Guillaume Apollinaire, Wilhelm Küchelbecker, and Rainer Maria Rilke.
During a hospital stay in the spring of 1969, Shostakovich composed his Symphony No. 14 for soprano, bass, string orchestra, and percussion. Modest Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death, which Shostakovich had already orchestrated several years earlier, are clearly recognizable as a source of inspiration. This penultimate symphony is conceived as a cycle of eleven settings of poems by various poets (Lorca, Apollinaire, Küchelbecker, and Rilke), all of which deal with death. In a speech introducing his new symphony, Shostakovich stated: "Death awaits each and every one of us. I can see nothing good in the fact that our lives end this way, and that is what I want to convey in this work." In the score, the poem texts are printed in Russian, German, and their respective original languages.
