Mendelssohn's "Walpurgis Night" with only seven wind instruments instead of the usual 15? Thanks to the present arrangement for chamber orchestra, this is possible and an attractive alternative when limited spatial conditions, a tight budget or the size of the choir require a certain flexibility in instrumentation. By reducing the symphonic wind instrumentation in particular, the sound volume is reduced. However, the symphonic character and a high dynamic range are retained. All vocal parts (solos and chorus) are identical to the original version, so that the piano reductions, choral scores and practice aids of the introduced Carus edition (Carus 40.138/00) remain fully usable.
