Description:
THE GYPSY BARON (DER ZIGEUNERBARON) is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) which premiered at the Theater an der Wien on October 24, 1885. Its libretto, penned by the author Ignaz Schnitzer, was based on the story Saffi by Mór Jókai. Set in 18th century Hungary, it tells the story of a gypsy girl who is discovered to be the daughter of a Turkish Pasha and the owner of a hidden fortune. During the composer's lifetime, the operetta enjoyed great success, second only to the popularity of DIE FLEDERMAUS.
