Description:
In 1888, Erik Satie (1866-1925) completed his TROIS GYMNOPÉDIES, three lilting, dream-like exercises for solo piano. They were published separately, the second one appearing last in 1895. Working as a pianist in Paris cafés in the 1880s, he devised the term "furniture music" to describe musical pieces that could enhance the atmosphere of a public space without requiring the full attention of the listener. The title derives from the French word gymnopaedia, an ancient festival which showcased the Spartan fighting spirit with choral singing and dances. This Claude Debussy orchestration of GYMNOPÉDIES 1 and 3 was edited by Carl Simpson. Instrumentation: 2.1.0.0: 4.0.0.0: Perc (1): 2Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
