Description:
As a long-time Bolzano cathedral musician and founder of the first Bolzano Cäcilienverein, Franz Schöpf played an important role in raising the standard of church music in South Tyrol in the 19th century. Although associated with Cecilianism, Schöpf's numerous works reveal a tangible, vivid, even popular musicality without ideological limitations. His endeavour to create good and practicable music for simpler circumstances also characterizes his Passion oratorio 'Jesu Abschied zu Bethanien', which deals with Jesus' submission to the impending suffering and the reactions of his mother and his disciples. The predominantly homophonic choral part can be mastered by any choir without difficulty and the accompaniment can be reduced to the organ. This means that even smaller choirs can set a 'new' oratorical accent in the Passiontide thanks to this cozy and sympathetic work.
