Description:
Known today almost exclusively as the composer of the Mozart Requiem, the Austrian composer was a celebrated conductor (including at the Vienna Court Opera) and composer of both secular and sacred vocal and instrumental works during his lifetime. A pupil of Mozart and Salieri and a friend of Beethoven, he wrote works that were completely in tune with the times and still have unlimited validity today. In the present 'Ave Maria', edited for the first time, Süßmayr juxtaposes a distinctive alto (or bass) solo with a calmly flowing, masterfully crafted 'Alleluja' choral fugue. This rediscovered, beautiful-sounding work is a worthwhile enrichment for church services and concerts.
