Description:
Bohuslav Martinu's Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra No. 1 exists in three versions: the first from 1930, the second from 1939 and the third from 1955. These three versions differ primarily in their instrumentation, while the changes in the solo part are significantly smaller. In terms of form and thematic structure, they are almost identical.
This volume includes all three versions and sheds new light on the circumstances of their creation. The original version from 1930, composed in Paris, is presented here for the first time; the second version, composed in 1939 in Vieux-Moulin, was never published during Martinu's lifetime and is made generally accessible with this edition. The score of the third version, on the other hand, was apparently published immediately after its completion in Nice in 1955; the cello part was carefully reviewed by the cellist Pierre Fournier at the composer's request.
The preface examines the complex genesis of all three versions of the concerto as well as their publication history and reception. Selected facsimiles of the autograph score document the cuts made by the composer, difficult passages and the original part of the first version with the composer's later changes for the third. All musical and textual sources relevant to the edition are described and evaluated in the critical commentary.
