Description:
World premiere: October 23, 1995, in Regina, Canada, by Christian Lindberg and the Regina Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Vladimir Conta). My husband Richard, a trombonist and musicologist, gave me the idea to write this Olomouc Concerto in the classical three-movement style when he was working in Olomouc, in the Czech Republic (formerly Olmütz in Moravia) and came across an article by the well-known Czech musicologist Jiri Sehnal, who referred to a music catalog from the years 1769–77 found in the library of Maximilian Hamilton, Bishop of Olmütz. This catalog contained thematic incipits, each consisting of two complete measures, from three pre-classical trombone concertos by anonymous composers whose manuscripts had been lost. Canadian Radio then commissioned me to write this concerto for the Swedish virtuoso Christian Lindberg. Each of these three movements is built entirely upon these catalog incipits in order to respect and preserve the original creative vision of the 18th-century composers. Consequently, the movements are monothematic but developed in a strict, traditional classical style. The first movement, Allegro moderato, takes the form of an allegro sonata; the second, Andante amabile, is a theme with variations; and the final movement, Allegro con spirito, is a rondo culminating in a fugue.
