Description:
Composed in 2000 and thoroughly revised in 2014, Byron Adams’ Concerto for Cello and Orchestra is dedicated to the memory of his mentor, Ellis Bonoff Kohs. Using a musical cipher, the composer transformed Kohs’s initials (EBK) into a three-note motif that generates nearly all of the score’s thematic material. Each of the three movements also weaves in a southern Celtic folk hymn, chosen for its beauty and spirituality. From the scherzo-like energy of the first movement, through the variations of the second, to the finale in sonata-rondo form, the work combines lyricism, virtuosity, and deep personal resonance, concluding with a majestic reaffirmation of the motif before a somber, rugged conclusion.
