Description:
The German Requiem by Johannes Brahms was composed in 1866. The first complete performance of the work took place on February 18, 1869, at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, after individual movements had been heard earlier in Vienna, Bremen, and Zurich. Breitkopf & Härtel published the work for the first time (with score, choral and orchestral parts, and the composer's piano reduction) as part of the Brahms Complete Edition (1926-28), which was academically supervised by Eusebius Mandyczewski and Hans Gál on behalf of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna.
