FESTE ROMANE (ROMAN FESTIVALS) , P 157 is a tone poem in four movements completed in 1928 by Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) . It is the last of his three tone poems about Rome, following FOUNTAINS OF ROME and PINES OF ROME. Each movement depicts a scene of celebration in ancient and contemporary Rome. "Circenses" (Circus Games) uses trumpet fanfares to evoke the atmosphere of gladiator contests. "Il Giubileo" (The Jubilee) portrays the Christian Jubilee, which takes place every fifty years. "L'Ottobrata" (October Harvest) represents the harvest and hunt festival in Rome. "La Befana" (The Epiphany) depicts the title festival as celebrated in the Piazza Navona. FESTE ROMANE premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on February 21, 1929 under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. FESTE ROMANE is still performed frequently today. Instrumentation: 3(3rd d.
