Description:
Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871) composed his comic opera Fra Diavolo, ou L'hôtellerie de Terracine, AWV 18 in 1830, with a libretto by Eugène Scribe based loosely on the exploits of the legendary Italian bandit Michele Pezza, known as "Fra Diavolo." Premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on January 28, 1830, the opera quickly became one of Auber's greatest successes. The overture captures the opera's lively spirit through energetic rhythms and a succession of memorable themes that foreshadow both the comic intrigue and adventurous atmosphere of the stage work. Blending elegance with high-spirited momentum, the overture reflects the style of French opéra comique at its most entertaining and refined. While the complete opera is less frequently staged than in the nineteenth century, the Fra Diavolo Overture remains a popular concert piece, programmed for its tunefulness and theatrical flair.
