Description:
The "Gesang der Parzen" op. 89 was composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1882. In his last work for choir and orchestra, he set a section from the drama "Iphigenia in Tauris" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. According to Max Kalbeck, he was inspired by the performance of Iphigenia by Charlotte Wolter (1834-1897) at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The composition was written during a stay in Ischl together with two chamber music works and is thematically closely related to the "Schicksalslied" op. 54 (PB 3220) from 1871. The successful premiere took place in Basel in December 1882, and in April 1883 it was also performed as part of a birthday concert for the dedicatee, Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen.
