Giselle ou Les Wilis - known today as "Giselle" - was premiered on June 28, 1841 at the Paris Opéra to an enthusiastic audience and still has a firm place in the international ballet repertoire today. However, the specific way in which the score has been handed down into the 21st century has meant that many remarkable and meaningful elements of the work are no longer clearly recognizable.

Some versions of "Giselle" have been orchestrated on the basis of piano scores for practical reasons. Others are more closely based on the Paris Opera sources, but have been modified over the years. Still others are based on a very flawed orchestral score copy made by the Opéra - apparently a reference copy that was not used in performances - and require careful cross-checking with the autograph and the original orchestral parts. Conductors have therefore been forced to use versions based on problematic sources - often with ambiguous or anachronistic orchestrations, errors in the musical text, altered dynamics and deviating notes. An authentic, scholarly-critical edition of the score has not yet been published. Doug Fullington and Marian Smith have now produced such a score for practical use on the basis of the available source material - including previously unevaluated original orchestral parts used at the Paris Opera between 1841 and 1868, as well as Adolphe Adam's autograph composition score. This edition is suitable for traditional and other stage productions as well as for concert performances and recordings. Common insertions, such as the variation in the first act, the so-called "Bauern" pas de deux by Friedrich Burgmüller, as well as the waltz variation in the second act, are included.
