This practical edition follows the revised first volume of the "New Edition of the Complete Works of Heinrich Schütz" (BA05935-01), published in 2017, for which editor Bettina Varwig was able to draw on all extant sources for the first time. This has made it possible to gain a new perspective on the presumed form of the work. The edition preserves the original musical notation and follows the editorial principles of the Schütz edition. Of the introduction, only the figured bass with the opening text "Die Geburt" has survived; therefore, the instrumental and choral parts must be reconstructed for a performance. Arno Paduch developed such a reconstruction in 2024 for a performance at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig. His version of the introduction has been incorporated into the new edition.
