Description:
In his compositions, Richard Strauss demonstrates his deep understanding of the character of the Romantic horn. He achieved his greatest success in this respect with his first horn concerto, which - alongside Mozart's contributions to this genre - is still one of the most famous and most frequently performed solo concertos. Originally composed in a version for horn and piano, the orchestral version was premiered in Meiningen in March 1885. Strauss was unable to attend the premiere, but learned from his uncle's report that Hans von Bülow "visibly conducted the concerto himself with great enthusiasm and interest."
Editor Peter Damm, former principal horn of the Staatskapelle Dresden and world-class soloist, has not only performed the concerto himself over 170 times in public, but has also presented fundamental research findings and publications on its genesis, which have now been incorporated into the first Urtext edition of this work. The editor has also added some practical performance tips to the preface.
The piano reduction and study edition are published by G. Henle Verlag, Munich, to accompany this edition. Henle Verlag, Munich.
