Description:
The composer Albert Lortzing is best known today for his comic operas such as Zar und Zimmermann and Der Waffenschmied. But he also wrote sacred music. In 1822 - under the impression of the performances of great choral symphonic works at the Lower Rhine Music Festival - the composer, who was only 21 years old, ventured to set a sacred hymn to music. In his composition Dich preist, Allmächtiger for four-part choir, soloists and orchestra, however, he cannot deny his penchant for opera: catchy melodies, effective instrumentation and expressively varied arrangements lend the work a scenic character. The palette ranges from powerful wind sounds in praise of God's omnipotence to 'classical' fugati and intimate, transparently accompanied solo and ensemble passages.
