Anton Kraft was Haydn’s principal cellist in Eisenstadt and later in Vienna, and he premiered Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. For the first time, a new critical edition is available that does justice to the significance of this virtuosic masterpiece, which was originally published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1804 but has long been out of print. Beethoven’s spirit is evident throughout the musical language. Overall, Anton Kraft displays an individual and creative style full of wit, making Haydn’s praise for him—expressed nearly twenty years earlier in recognition of his diligence and progress in composition—entirely understandable.
