Description:
The premiere took place on October 18, 1887, at the Gürzenich in Cologne, conducted by the composer. Parallel to the work on the orchestral score, the piano version had also been written, with which Brahms felt quite at home, as he confessed to Joachim in October 1887: 'Oh, how much more pleasant and clever it is to write for an instrument that one knows through and through - as I think I know the piano!'
