Thanks to the skilful dramatization, the independent instrumental parts and the effective choruses, Berlioz's trilogy "L'Enfance du Christ" (The Childhood of Christ) is a rewarding alternative for Christmas music-making. The genesis of the oratorio is adventurous: the nucleus of the three-part work were numbers from the middle section "Flight into Egypt". Berlioz composed them on a whim in 1850 and assigned them to a baroque composer he had invented. In 1854, under the title L'Enfance du Christ, the trilogy, supplemented by the parts "The Dream of Herod" and "The Arrival in Sais", had its celebrated premiere. Based on the Gospel of Matthew, Berlioz chose a different perspective on the events of Christmas with the visit of the Magi to Herod and the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt.
The score, first printed in 1855, was already based on a German secondary text. The critical edition by Carus offers a translation by Klaus Kreuser, which is based more on the French original than the first translation.
