Description:
A visit to the opera provided the impetus for dealing with the fairy-tale theme of the knight Raimund's love for the beautiful mermaid Melusine, which forms the basis of Mendelssohn's fourth concert overture. First sketched out in his head, as is customary, the work was probably put to paper from the end of March 1833. The premiere took place in London on April 7, 1834, and the revised version was first performed in Leipzig on November 23, 1835. It was not counted as No. 4 of the Concert Overtures until about 1857 in a posthumous edition. (Ralf Wehner in the Studien-Ausgabe des Mendelssohn-Werkverzeichnisses).
