Description:
The first of Beethoven's two Mass settings is decidedly modern and forward-looking in its subjective, confessional tonal language. It opens up completely new worlds of expression for the liturgical text. It is not a preliminary stage to the Missa solemnis, but an independent work that set standards for the further development of mass composition in the 19th century. Its novelty, which the composer himself was aware of ("I don't like to say anything about my mass or about myself in general, but I believe that I have treated the text as it has rarely been treated before"), opened up a hitherto unknown, contemporary approach to faith that is still relevant today. This important work of church music history is now available from Carus in a new critical edition by Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich.
Thanks to the arrangement (arr. K. F. Müller, Carus 40.688/50), it is also possible to perform the work on a smaller scale.
