The soft light of the early morning, the song of the cicadas and the beguiling scent of thyme: "Matinée de Provence" describes a morning in Provence, from the first rays of sunshine to the oppressive midday heat. Ravel captures the scenery of the text with catchy melodies, colorful harmonies and sophisticated instrumentation. The result is a musical mood full of sensuality and atmosphere - a true choral gem and an exciting addition to the concert repertoire of mixed choirs. In 1903, Maurice Ravel competed for the prestigious "Prix de Rome" with "Matinée de Provence" - for the fourth time. The coveted prize from the Parisian "Académie des Beaux-Arts" was associated with a study visit to Rome lasting several years. But this time, too, he was denied victory. Nevertheless, his composition made it through to the main round. Although the work was composed under strict competition conditions, it still impressively demonstrates Ravel's characteristic tonal language. This first Urtext edition is based on Ravel's autograph. Free pronunciation aids are available for rehearsal.
