Description:
Mendelssohn's overture was inspired by two poems by Goethe, which had already inspired Ludwig van Beethoven to write a choral work accompanied by orchestra. The main work on this piece probably took place in the summer of 1828. The first public performance took place in Berlin on December 1, 1832. In the revised version, the work was first heard in Leipzig on April 20, 1834. It was counted as No. 3 of the concert overtures with the first printing of the score in 1835 (Breitkopf & Härtel). (Ralf Wehner in the Studien-Ausgabe des Mendelssohn-Werkverzeichnisses).
