Description:
We know that the famous opera composers of the Italian bel canto also composed great sacred music, not least thanks to Verdi's Requiem or Puccini's Messa di Gloria, but most of these works still receive little attention. These include the Messa di Requiem, which Gaetano Donizetti composed in 1835 out of sadness at the early death of his colleague Vincenzo Bellini. As the Requiem was neither performed nor printed during Donizetti's lifetime, it is still a discovery today. It impresses with its variety and intensity: dramatic choruses with a full orchestra, fugues and a cappella passages alternate with long cantilenas in the soloists' parts, which are often characterized by the dark timbre of the three male voices and the accompanying low winds. The soprano and alto soloists are not given solo arias, but are only part of the soloist ensemble.
