Description:
Bach had bequeathed the score of the Mass in A major to his son Wilhelm Friedemann. From him, the copy soon came into the possession of the Leipzig publishing house of Breitkopf & Härtel, as can be seen from Breitkopf's thematic index from 1761. The document, which is significant in terms of cultural history, remained one of the core pieces of Breitkopf & Härtel's archive in Leipzig and passed into the possession of the Darmstadt State and University Library in 1951.
