Description:
The Missa Sancti Josephi occupies a key position among Jan Dismas Zelenka's 20 or so large masses. In this mass, which was probably composed in 1732 for a saint's feast (therefore without a Credo), the composer adopted the operatic style of Johann Adolf Hasse for the first time, who had premiered his opera "Cleofide" in Dresden in 1731. Zelenka's unmistakable individuality creates a completely independent work with high technical demands, which in many details points ahead to the important masses of the late period. The only source of the mass presented here for the first time in print is the badly damaged autograph score in the Saxon State and University Library in Dresden. The experienced Zelenka scholar Wolfgang Horn was able to reliably reconstruct the missing parts for the Carus edition.
