Composed in 1796, the "Missa in Tempore Belli", better known as the "Timpani Mass", got its name from the striking use of timpani and a brass fanfare at the beginning of the "Dona nobis pacem" – both clear and unusual references to a warlike context. One year after the first verifiable performance in the year of its origin as part of a first mass (the first solemn mass of a newly ordained priest), the work was performed again on the feast of the Archangel Michael, the patron saint of soldiers. In this mass, Haydn paid special attention to the instrumentation, so clarinets and horns are added in some movements.

This material, based on the revised new edition published by G. Henle Verlag, replaces BA04652. The new edition was necessary because in the meantime other relevant sources had been discovered and numerous errors had to be corrected.
