Description:
Urtext of both versions
The new edition of BWV 118 presents the work in the two different instrumental settings secured by the autograph scores: the earlier version with brass only and the later with mixed instruments. Both versions are printed one after the other. Of specific interest for an authentic performance practice are two 'Litui', which are required in both versions. Until today it is not certain which instruments these could be: High horns in B flat? Or rather trumpets? The work also poses unresolved questions in other respects: for example, it is unclear for what occasion the first version, written around 1736/37, was written, and the reason for the new instrumentation after 1740 is also unknown.
