Description:
The work is based on Ulrich Plenzdorf's novel "Paul und Paula oder Die Legende vom Glück ohne Ende" (Paul and Paula, or The Legend of Endless Happiness), one of the most beautiful love stories of the 1970s, which gained widespread recognition—especially in the former GDR—thanks in part to Heiner Carow's film adaptation "Paul und Paula". With his operatic debut, the composer—who draws inspiration from very ancient (modal) European and non-European compositional techniques, while also incorporating elements of hip-hop and rock—ventures into uncharted territory, both dramaturgically and musically. His musical theater piece, characterized by a strongly melodic and rhythmic style, occupies the space between opera and musical. It goes beyond Heiner Carow's film adaptation—in which, for political reasons, only the first part of the novel was adapted—and continues the plot in the second part up to Paul's disappearance. In selecting the material, Vollmer was particularly interested in the psychosocial conflict underlying the political context, which—in contrast to the setting and time period of the events (East Berlin, the 1970s)—remains extraordinarily relevant and psychologically explosive. This applies to "Paul and Paula" just as much as it does to, for example, Puccini's political thriller "Tosca" or Verdi's "Rigoletto," which, more than 100 years after their creation, still have a great deal to offer people today in terms of psychological insight, even though their political context is long gone.
