Description:
One of Gabriel Fauré's most popular compositions is his Pavane. It is less well known that this stylized dance, which today is often only performed in the orchestral version or in various instrumental arrangements, was performed in this version with mixed choir at its premiere in April 1888. The song text in the style of Verlaine sketches the carefree society of the Belle Époque with dalliances and coquetries of the dancers.
The Carus new edition is based on Fauré's autograph and thus includes the original, somewhat faster tempo indication. In addition to this edition of the orchestral version with a piano reduction written by the composer, Carus has published a contemporary arrangement for choir with piano four hands (Carus 10.402/10).
In the audio sample, the figure humaine kammerchor under the direction of Denis Rouger performs with Olga Wien at the piano - accompanied by the piano reduction of the orchestral version (Carus 10.402/03).
