Description:
Psalm texts inspired Mendelssohn throughout his career, and he left behind five large orchestral psalms in addition to a cappella movements. In 1837, Schumann described Psalm 42 as "the highest level that he [Mendelssohn] reached as a church composer, indeed that modern church music has reached at all".
Thanks to the arrangement for chamber orchestra (arr. Homolka Carus 40.072/50), it is also possible to perform the work on a smaller scale.
