Biography
As a French choirmaster and musicologist, Charles Bordes played a significant role in rediscovering the Renaissance polyphonic repertoire and French baroque music during the three decades preceding World War I. He is best known for his work to promote early music, which dwarfs his compositional output in scope and reknown.

Founder of the Schola Cantorum alongside Vincent d'Indy and Alexandre Guilmant, he advocated a thorough training for church musicians and choral singers. Like many young musicians of the time, he encountered difficulties in getting his compositions published and had to appeal to Ernest Chausson to have his first songs published by Hamelle. He founded a collaborative enterprise called Édition mutuelle (1902), underwritten by subscribers, to publish works by Schola faculty and students. Georges Servières, in a series of articles devoted to French composers of art song, underlines the importance of this publication in the reception of Bordes' songs, which rank with the best of Debussy and Chausson.
