Das Requiem von Gabriel Faure liegt bei Carus nun in zwei Fassungen vor, der sinfonischen Fassung von 1901 sowie der Fassung mit kleinem Orchester von 1889. Die im Jahre 1901 veröffentlichte 'sinfonische Fassung' des Requiems von Gabriel Faure war das Ergebnis eines 13-jährigen Kompositionsprozesses. Ausgehend von einer fünfsätzigen Urgestalt für Streicher, Harfe und Orgel hatte der Komponist für Aufführungen nacheinander zwei weitere Sätze hinzugefügt und die Instrumentierung stufenweise erweitert. Die vorliegende Rekonstruktion einer 'Fassung mit kleinem Orchester' zeichnet sich von anderen derartigen Versuchen dadurch aus, dass sie das Werk erstmals nicht in einer Mischfassung,sondern in seiner Gestalt aus dem Jahre 1889 anbietet. Diese unterscheidet sich von der Letztfassung sowohl in musikalischer Hinsicht als auch in der Besetzung, denn sie verwendet noch keine Flöten, Klarinetten und Fagotte und nur zwei Hörner. Ein ausführliches Vorwort in drei Sprachen und ein kritischer Bericht mit Informationen zur Quellenlage, Edition und Lesarten ergänzen die kritische Ausgabe.
