Description:
LE ROI MALGRÉ LUI (THE RELUCTANT KING) is a comic opera by Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), based on a 1836 vaudeville play by Virginie Ancelot. The stage work depicts the brief reign of Henri, Duke of Anjou, as the King of Poland, and his subsequent efforts to flee the country. The opera premiered on May 18, 1887 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Despite its relatively tepid success, Maurice Ravel enthusiastically declared that he would have preferred to be credited for writing it than Wagner's Ring cycle. Although it has rarely been revived, two excerpts from the opera have appeared in concert halls and recordings, the FÊTE POLONAISE in Act 2, and the DANSE SLAVE in Act 3 which is presented in this Kalmus edition. This arrangement for salon/theater orchestra was completed by Otto Langey n 1919. Instrumentation: 1.1.2.1: 2.2.1.0: Timp.Perc(2-3): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Condensed Score in set. The original, fuller Chabrier orchestration is also available from the publisher.
