Description:
Johannes Simon Mayr can justifiably be counted among the most musically diverse and internationally successful composers of the Classical and early Romantic periods: Of German origin, his artistic path led him via Switzerland to Italy, where he laid the foundations for his excellent reputation as a composer, which spread throughout Europe, in Venice and Bergamo. Equally appreciated and celebrated in the fields of opera, oratorio, symphonic and chamber instrumental music as well as church music, the latter was particularly influential in his extensive late works. From this, we present a setting of the popular Marian antiphon that is appealing in many respects: The protagonist is the bass soloist, whose expressive part is accompanied by a very easy-to-sing three-part choral setting and a modestly scored instrumental ensemble. The work, which is entirely in the spirit of the late classical period, expands the repertoire of three-part choirs with a stylish and sonorous gem that will be equally popular in church services and concerts.
