Description:
Johannes Brahms did not want to compete with Beethoven in the field of symphonic music for a long time. With the six-movement Serenade in D major, the young composer consciously designed a work in a genre that had had its heyday in the 18th century and thus before Beethoven. Initially he conceived the serenade for a smaller instrumentation, in 1860 with full orchestra, although the success with the public was only then slow to set in.
The New Brahms Complete Edition takes as its main source a copy of the first printing of the score, which Brahms used as a hand copy. There, however, errors remained unnoticed, which can also be found in later printings. Only the New Brahms Edition thus offers a musical text for the D major Serenade, which of course takes into account all of the composer's corrections and eliminates further inadequacies.
Flute (2), oboe (2), clarinet (2), bassoon (2), horn (4), trumpet (2), timpani, strings
